Benfica vs Manchester United: Champions League prediction, team news and line-ups

Mourinho will still be without Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick in midfield, meaning the United coach is likely to again deploy a three-man defence as he did against Liverpool and Romelu Lukaku may be rested.

United have won their opening two Group A games to sit top of the pile, with a double-header against Benfica – bottom of the group – up next.

With FC Basel and CSKA Moscow facing each other twice in the next two gameweeks, four points or more against the Portuguese champions would all but guarantee United a spot in the last-16 of the competition.

Start time

Benfica host Manchester United at Estadio da Luz, Lisbon. The match will kick off at 7.45pm on Wednesday 18 October, 2017.

Mourinho will still be without Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick in midfield, meaning the United coach is likely to again deploy a three-man defence as he did against Liverpool.

With Eric Bailly another likely absentee with a groin problem, Victor Lindelof – used only sparingly this season as Mourinho gets the defender up to speed – could start against his former club.

Romelu Lukaku may be rested after a frustrating performance at Anfield and only recently coming back from an ankle injury, meaning Marcus Rashford could start up front after coming off the bench against Liverpool.

Predicted line-ups

Man Utd starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Lindelof, Darmian, Herrera, Blind, Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Rashford
