With the Blues confirming this week that Diego Costa is closing in on a return to Atletico Madrid, many have questioned if Morata is truly the man to replace him up front.

Morata hit back at his doubters in style with a superbly-taken treble at the bet365 Stadium, and his heroics have Chelsea closing in on an Arsenal record.

With 17 different hat-trick scorers since the Premier League began in 1992/93, Chelsea are now only two behind Arsenal, who lead the way with 19 different hat-trick heroes.

Chelsea’s first hat-trick since Costa netted three times against Swansea City at the start of the 2014/15 season, with the departing Spaniard arguably not quite showing the finishing touch of a truly world class centre-forward during his Stamford Bridge career.

Costa’s highest tally in the Premier League was only 20, putting him nine behind eventual Golden Boot winner Harry Kane last season.
